So much good work (AHS newsletter)

Kate was one of the first dogs brought to AHS from the Search and Rescue efforts during the Bastrop fires. She arrived extremely malnourished, suffering from an advanced skin condition, missing most of her teeth and with a palette deformity that made eating a challenge for her. It was clear that Kate was a stray. On Monday, all unclaimed Bastrop animals went up for adoption, and Kate was one of the first to find her new home. She now has kids to love on, a backyard to run in, a doggie-sibling to play with, and a huge bed to sleep in. She couldn’t be happier! Thank you for helping us give Kate such a happy ending!

We hope to have many more amazing matches made this month during Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, when all dogs are only $20! View available dogs now!

Support Their Recovery: Help Lady Walk Again

Meet Lady, a four-year-old Shih Tzu, who was rescued from an abusive puppy mill in 2009. Unfortunately, the tragedy of Lady’s story didn’t end with her rescue:  Lady has mysteriously lost her ability to walk. We are still unsure of the cause, but we do know that Lady has little muscle tone in her rear legs, so our volunteers have begun to walk her frequently holding with a sling that allows her to move easier and slowly build muscle. She has a long road to recovery ahead of her because she also suffers from skin and dental issues. A dog Lady’s age should be running around, happily chasing balls in her backyard, not wheeling in a cart and undergoing major dental procedures. Please help us to provide Lady, and other special needs animals like her, with the care they deserve by donating today.

Thought about doing Tanabata as a Fairy Tale costume, but no one would get it (a common failing of mine)

Reject the PROTECT IP Act

The dangerous PROTECT IP Internet censorship bill (or PIPA) seeks to grant the government new powers to force ISPs and search engines to redirect or dump users’ attempts to reach websites’ URLs, all in the name of stopping websites “dedicated to infringing activities.” Big media and its allies in Congress are billing the PROTECT IP Act as a new way to prevent online infringement, but Internet rights advocates know that PIPA would invite Internet security risks, threaten online speech, and hamper Internet innovation. Send an email now to urge legislators in Congress to reject this dangerous bill! Send an email now to urge your members of Congress to reject this dangerous bill!

Syrian Internet Shutdown

Putting Fair Use Forward

Two professors at American University are on a mission to show how, under fair use, many scholars can use copyrighted material without breaking the law, even if they never ask the rights holders and even if they hope to profit from their resulting academic books.
